news Encroaching hawkers evicted
Corporation swings into action on NSC Bose RoadThe Chennai Corporation with the assistance of police on Wednesday removed around 100 unauthorised hawkers from the busy NSC Bose Road, providing some respite to road-users.
A senior official of the civic body said the action followed complaints from motorists and residents that hawkers had encroached upon a portion of the carriageway disrupting vehicular movement and posing problems for pedestrians. "We have impounded the wooden platforms that they used to display wares and hope the move would
prevent hawkers from setting shop again," he said.
Welcoming the action, S. Nijamudin, a resident of Parrys, said the traffic diversion for Metro Rail work had resulted in congestion in the area. Traffic changes on Rattan Bazaar Road, NSC Bose Road, Esplanade Road and Frazer Bridge Road for the work served little purpose in the face of on-road parking of vehicles and encroachments by the hawkers.

M. Subramaniam, a long-time resident of Park Town, said the hawkers were mostly from neighbouring areas and dealt in vegetables, fruits and other commodities. Many of them started doing business on a temporary basis during evening hours a few years ago, but gradually occupied a portion of the road permanently.

The Corporation official said that the civic body intended to carry out similar operation on a regular basis.

Arul Das of the Unorganised Workers Federation said the eviction drive was being carried out as it was causing disturbance to Metro Rail work and the general public.

He said had the hawkers been allotted a proper place, they would not have occupied the road.

"The National Policy for Urban Street Vendors has not been implemented in Tamil Nadu. The Federation, he added, was planning to meet Mayor Saidai S. Doraisamy and urge him to take steps to streamline the hawkers," he said.
