Realistic movies were once a rare commodity in Tamil cinema. But it is no more the same now, especially in the last few years. The latest addition to the list of movies that reflect life is 'Kollaikaran'. The film by Tamilselvan is more of 'Kalavani' meeting 'Mynaa'.

Viddharth who proved his mettle doing a strong role in 'Mynaa' is at the scheme of things here.
Three cheers to him for giving his best. What begins as a hilarious journey settles down to an emotional pot-boiler. With characters that resemble faces we see in daily life occupying the scene, 'Kollaikaran' promises a different fare.

Though the story reminds of movies made in the 1980s, the packaging makes it different. There are enough twists that sustain our interest. The director seems to know the pulse of the audience well.

Kuruvi (Vidharth) does all harmless crimes in the village. He lives life in his own way though he has an unmarried elder sister and a mentally-challenged younger sister.

He incurs the wrath of locals for his wayward life. Honesty is the word that is against him. Things take a turn when he meets Krishnaveni (Sanchita). She manages to win the heart of Kuruvi.

Her love creates a desire in him to lead a good life. He tries to reform but is not accepted by the society. Enter Nagendran (Ravishankar), the village's big gun. He hatches a conspiracy and for a fault committed by him, he holds Kuruvi responsible.

The rest is how Kuruvi overcomes all odds and ends the villain and his antics.

Viddharth renders a decent show. He is good at comical sequences and also pours out right emotions. Sanchita as rural girl is apt for the role. Young Johan has composed music for Vairamuthu's lyrics that is appealing.

Though there are clichd sequences here and there, kudos to Tamilselvan for rendering a potboiler that is entertaining in the first half and engaging in the latter part. 'Kollaikaran' may steal your hearts.
